Betty Hart took a job teaching in Albany in September, 2005. She was Western Division Governor at the time and immediately set about founding a club, as well as administering the Division from far away. On November 14th David and Glenis Nicholas from her home club Victoria Quay went to Albany to run a Demonstration Meeting. It wasn’t a big meeting, but it was a success. Numbers steadily built up and now Club 867905 has chartered, in Area W21, joining Victoria Quay there.

A Public Relations Success Long established clubs can learn a lot from the new kid on the block. Part of the Charter Dinner was taken up acknowledging and accepting contributions not only from the two Sponsor Clubs, Victoria Quay and Foothills, and from District 73, but also from 7 local Sponsors which included local businesses, the State Member of Parliament Peter Watson, and the City of Albany. The congratulations and support were gratefully acknowledged, and the money will be put to very good use. VP PR Pauline Saunier was the organiser of this stunning success. She certainly knows how to put a proposition.

Visitors from Perth
The 35 people present at the Dinner included four from Victoria Quay – Mark Richards, Glenis Nicholas, David Nicholas and Michail Overkov, two from Foothills, District 73 Public Relations Officer Maree Pickens from St Georges, and Convention 2007 Chair Ian Pickens from City of Perth. Betty Hart was Toastmaster, while Amity President, Sandra Hart (yes, they are related), acknowledged and accepted support from the Sponsors. The program included two toasts – from Sandra and Glenis, Table Topics, two project speeches and their evaluations from club members. Ian Pickens urged the Albany members to come to the District Convention in Fremantle, May next year.

President’s Distinguished this year!Betty came from Victoria Quay, a club which is always President’s Distinguished with all 10 Goals. She is determined to carry on the tradition. Mark Richards, W21 Area Governor, drove to Albany in August to conduct Club Officer Training (it’s a 400km journey). The official charter date is September 1, but somehow World Headquarters has found it possible to credit that training of 6 officers within the first round, nominally between June and August, so 10 Distinguished Club Program goals are still possible. Certain, says Betty. Already, the Club has 2 Goals. Pauline Saunier, the VP Public Relations, has registered a CC and a CL, while Goal 10 for the Officer List and September Renewals is already in the bag.Just the beginningIt was an outstanding Charter Dinner, with clear evidence of lots of effective planning and hard work. But the Club isn’t resting on its laurels. Amity meets weekly on Monday evenings, so David and Glenis Nicholas stayed on in Albany to take part in that meeting as well, almost a year after the Demonstration Meeting. The Committee met two days later to plan among other things a New Member Campaign. President’s Distinguished (with 10 goals) in its first year? It’s a better bet than the favorite in the Melbourne Cup.
